 | 02:02 pm My first Calling (and Goth Eucharist) for quite a while. Got a few days off work. Leaving home about 1330, bus, train, train, train, walk from Cambridge station.
I'll have glowing thing/s plus camera with me (though I seem to have mislaid a ball I charged just yesterday).
Then on to London tomorrow morning (if anyone can put up with me for a couple of hours it's be much appreciated - otherwise I'm hoping it's a fine night...
And then to Paris by Eurostar, Queen Adreena playing in the 19e quarter, back to London and then home on my normal Thursday night train.
(And spot where I might well be popping into work in that plan...)
Hope there's plenty of you out tonight... Current Mood: tired

April 26th, 2008
 | 01:30 pm Wow that *was* a night out. I thought it was just going to be a quiet night with a couple of drinks and I'd meet my sister's newish boyfriend. We ended up in a different town than we started in, meeting people I've not seen in years (well, I saw one of them in drag about 14 months ago). Much drinking was had. Various pretty young ladies were about. I thought a bloke was trying to chat me up, but he just wanted to tell he of his love for slipknot which his stripey cardi hadn't prepared me for.
One of these people was telling a tale about a girl he hadn't seen in years who turned up halfway through his telling of the story and walked out again whereupon I realised that I knew the subject of the story and had once asked her out.
We ended up in Tescos about 4am and getting to bed after 0430. I think I may be too old for this, but it *was* fun.
Except I seem to have paid for the taxi home.

 | 04:02 pm Usually when I work from home I have the radio on in the background (or music when there's nothing on).
For some reason I've had the telly on in the background part of today.
Things that have annoyed in the last 15 minutes:
Countdown: Relating the story of how Terry Nation got the name for Daleks from an Encyclopedia DAL-LEK. Hmm, how unlikely is that - the first volume is for the first 3 letters of the alphabet and then this one is for the next 9! Plus, he admitted making that up years ago. Countdown (again): The Germans have a word for when a song gets stuck in your head. It translates as "earworm". Really? That'd be like the word "earworm" that's I'm sure has been in common parlance for years. Certainly noone has ever asked my what I've meant when I've used it. Perhaps it's a young person's word ;) Advert: New Someoneorother Organic Compost - 100% chemical free. That'd be made from vacuum, then? Current Mood: irritated

 | 03:44 pm Am more than usually annoyed by spam.
Someone has got hold of my work e-mail address (and an old form of it at that, which is still being treated as the same by our mail server).
They've then sent out their spam for some sort of Car Wheel Cleaning system. They've used my address as the return path in the mail header so I get all the bounces from assorted mail systems for every email address that isn't valid.
I've had 10 so far today - they're currently arriving about every half hour.
Is there anything I can do about this?
EDIT: I've set up a rule which is catching them and popping them in their own little folder. Current Mood: Pissed off

 | 05:52 pm Howdy.
Trying to sort out my life over the next couple of months, partly by making things more regular.
The Goth Eucharist has gone to monthly (or possibly 4-weekly), so I'll probably be timing most of my visits to Cambridge to catch that so I can get that and the Calling in one dose).
I'm hoping to get to the Calling April 8th.
I'm definitely going on May 6th. Hmm just looked at flyer - stops at the one before - please tell me this one isn't cancelled?
My life would be a lot easier if someone could donate a couch or bed or some such for a few hours after the first MAY Calling. I'll probably be leaving in time for the 0600 or 0700 coach. Bleh :o Current Mood: sleepy

 | 05:11 pm Now this amused me - there are far more important issues discussed - but Ms Desrosiers explains she didn't take someone on as a hairstylist because "she lived too far away".
She lives in Acton. The Salon is in Kings X. Google maps puts it at 6.6 miles. Depending where in Acton she lives it may just need one tube journey with no changes.
As someone who lives 214 miles from work (and never lived closer than 26 miles to it), this amused me. Current Mood: amused

 | 04:27 pm Am looking into a couple of visits to Cambridge.
April 8th thought I might pop along to the goth_eucharist
If I get the train back to London it will cost £17.90 for a single. This is the cheapest available fare by rail. The journey takes 83 minutes.
I've booked a ticket from Steeton & Silsden to Cambridge on May 6th when I intend to visit the Goth Eucharist and the Calling. Steeton and Silsden is on the boundary of West and North Yorkshire. The journey takes around 4 hours. The single fare? £9.80.
Bizarre?

Are there any decent clubs in Leeds (wait for it) which are open late.
By late I don't mean 0230.
My first train is 0555, my first bus 0630 and a taxi home is over 40 quid.
So now I'm back in West Yorkshire how do I enjoy it?
Yes, by decent I probably mean goth.

 | 12:18 pm - Stuff and Birthday Over two weeks since my last post.
Life is busy.
Venice is still the most romantic place I've visited.
I have a lot of photos to put up somewhere.
I am not at the gig I may have led people to believe I would be at tonight, but may be at Camden Barfly tomorow night as I'm intrigued by a band called Cleckuddersfax.
Or maybe not... (http://s97.photobucket.com/albums/l203/cleckhuddersfax/)
I'll be celebrating my birthday in 3 stages ;)
I'm going out on Sunday night (17 Feb) in Camden - I'll be at the barfly for the gig. Feel free to suggest anywhere before or after.
I have an intimate dinner on the 23rd at my favourite Yorkshire eatingplace.
I'll be out in Cambridge on the 26th for the Calling.
Which brings me to a question. Do any of you Cambridge doods have a spare floor/bed/sofa on which to hold an all-celebrated-out Deerfold? That's not for tonight's Calling, which once again I'll miss, but for the next one which I will most definitely not be missing unless I get plague. I can leave whenever you do in the morning or mid-morning if you're not leaving early.

 | 08:49 pm Wahoo. Camera has come. I think I can now go to New Year's resolution and stop buying things I don't need for a while. Then I might stop having trouble with my money. I should be able to cope reasonably easily on what I'm currently earning - I have on rather less. I have a backlog of DVDs to watch. And I do owe my Mum a bit when she helped us out with the house deposit. She's not hassling me for it, but I ought to be paying it back a bit faster than I am.
Now, to Camera. It's really quite bizarre. It takes a weird type of battery which turns out not to be rechargeable or 2 AAs - including rechargable ones. Hmm, will I be splashing out 4 quid for relatively hard to find batteries or sticking rechargable AAs in it?. And it has a rather good zoom. Beware the man with glowing balls!

 | 03:41 pm - Tickets going cheap cheap Very late, I know, but...
I have a spare ticket for the new Radio 4 show "The museum of curiosity" for TONIGHT. Entrance 1815 - 1915 at the Radio Theatre, Portland Place W1A 1AA.
Presenter is John Lloyd - best known for being a producer of such things as QI, Blackadder and Spitting Image. The Curator of the museum is Bill Bailey.
3 guests come along and say why things should be in the museum - these can be objects or concepts.
I saw the pilot last year which was Quite Interesting (and in the IOP). Simon Munnery argued for the Church of England to go in - because of its smell.
Let me know if you wanna come - meet you there.
|
 | 10:21 am Sorry. Didn't make it to Cambridge last night.

December 19th, 2007
 | 06:22 pm OK, (nearly) end of year meme this for 2007, from antice ...
1.What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before? Live 215 miles from work
2.Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I really can't remember if I made any this year.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Yes - almost all of them, I think. Sprogs everywhere!
4.Did anyone close to you die? No
5.What countries did you visit? England (!)
6.What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007? Enough Sleep (hmm, I suspect I wrote that last year, too)
7.What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? 22nd September - I moved away from the South of England after 6 years.
8.What was your biggest achievement of the year? Getting work to agree to me working from home 2 days a week and making it work when I live 200 miles away despite our IT department's best attempts to sabotage it.
9.What was your biggest failure? I don't think I had a 'biggest failure' for once!
10.Did you suffer illness or injury? Nothing spectacular - had 3 days off ill. Did my back no good at all last weekend - slipped on ice and went straight down on my back on tarmac. Hopefully that'll improve too.
11.What was the best thing you bought? NiN tickets.
12.Whose behaviour merited celebration? Lou - she works so hard for us both.
13.Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? The only appalling behavious was in a good way ;)
14.Where did most of your money go? Good question - I've been wondering that myself.
15.What events did you get really, really, really excited about? NiN; Infest; Queen Adreena @ Texas Chainsaw Travelling Voodoo Horror show
16.What song will always remind you of 2007? A little early to tell, but probably Apocalyptica's "Helden".
17.Compared to this time last year, are you: i.happier or sadder? Neither - still got a wonderful girlfriend ii.thinner or fatter? A little fatter. Need to work on that. iii.richer or poorer? Hmm, paid more, but all my costs seem to have gone up, too.
18.What do you wish you'd done more of? More time with Lou when she was off with work would have been good.
19.What do you wish you'd done less of? Procrastinating.
20.How will you be spending Christmas? Visiting family *AND THEN GOING HOME*
21.Who did you spend the most time on the phone with? Lou
22.Did you fall in love in 2007? No - still there since 1999.
23. How many one-night stands? Erm, lemme see, duh, duh, duh and then duh and duh, makes ... none
24. What was your favorite TV program? The Doctor's the one for me. Who's that did you say? Though Heroes, QI and The Mighty Boosh made a good showing too
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? I don't think so. Not enough time to hate.
26. What was the best book you read? ???????
27. What was your greatest musical discovery or rediscovery? It's not been a good year for finding new bands. Have reconfirmed love affairs with NiN, Queen Adreena and Apocalyptica
28. What did you want and get? A house. It just turned out to be in Yorkshire, not Hertfordshire.
29. What did you want and not get? Tickets for the Mighty Boosh in Harrogate.
30. What were your favorite films of this year? Hmm, not sure.
31.What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? 33; Saw NiN in Manchester.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? I don't think I'd have had time for anything else!
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007? Black with occasional splashes of very bright colour. So, no change there, then.
34. What kept you sane? What makes you think I'm sane?
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most/least? Most: Probably Trent Reznor, or David Tennant. Which is odd, seeing as I'm straight. Least: Take your pick - there's dozens of "Celebrities" out there, adored by millions (or at least dozens) of people who I couldn't care less about.
36. What political issue stirred you the most? Hard to pick one. Probably exploitation. The people who work for peanuts so we can have cheap clothes/consumer goods. The people who die who wanted nothing to do with the conflicts around them. The animals that die unneccesarily for food.
37. Whom did you miss? So many people I'd love there to have been time to see too.
38. Who were the best new people you met? There's a couple of friendly new people at work - and ooh, a whole new year of students at Cambridge - a couple of whom ae happy to be photographed holding my balls.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007: There's never enough time for *everything* (have I learned it - we'll see)
40. What are your plans for 2008?: Venice, MAB, Apocalyptica, Alec Empire (really looking forward to that) see more free BBC shows - radio/Late Edition. Moving office at work - probably May-ish - should be "interesting".
|

 | 10:02 am Ordered tickets for Apocalyptica at the Forum on 7th March (downstairs, standing). Look to be starting to run out.
Tried to book tickets for the Mighty Boosh in Harrogate in *September* next year. They sold out before I managed to get through :(
Heading back to London this evening. Arriving St Pancras about 2300. I'm coming the slow way, but I'm coming first class. Then staying in a budget hostel! Leaving on the 20th and that's it for this year.
I had been planning to come to Cambridge tomorrow (I've one of my £1 tickets), but am knackered, so probably won't bother.

 | 01:22 pm Tuesday day: day off work. Bit of shopping, no rushing. Bought some Christmas gifts at the Trasport Museum ;) Had a late lunch around 1530 at Mildreds - it's the time to go, so quiet, so many waiters/resses.
Tuesday night : Apocalyptica.
Very good
Can't remember the support band, but they seem to have found a couple of unreleased Sisters of Mercy songs.
Apocalyptica: Their own stuff was good, bit of heavy classical, covers of Metallica, Sepulchura, Bowie.
Probably going to see them again in March (7th) ;)
On the way back to hotel passed random bath on pavement.
Got a few other gigs that I'm definitely or probably doing. Anyone else along for the ride?
Feb 12th - Robots in Disguise (LA2, probably) Feb 17th - MAB, MyPassion, (Camden Barfly, have ticket) March 5th - Alec Empire, (Dingwalls, probably) April 18/19 - Emile Autum (Sheffield/London - not sure which I'm going to)
It's good to have a few things to look forward to...

 | 06:06 pm Calling was good last night, if a little quiet with most of the students having fled.
Good to see a few who've not been out much in recent times.
Seem to have a lot of photos when I glanced at my camera this morning. They'll probably end up on facebook at some point.
Got a lift from chimera_s and a sofabed from morbidfrog both of which made the night more bearable after many nights with little sleep.
Slept in, but not so much that I was late for work.
And tonight's task : get some sleep. Possibly after getting something to eat. Hope the hostel is conducive to snoozing.

 | 09:52 am Temp job advert for anyone looking for something temporary and now even if it may not be a huge step up any career ladder:
We're looking for one or two people to go round on buses. You'd need to not mind travelling on buses - expect about 80% of the day to be on buses, 20% at bus stops waiting for them.
You'd be writing down information about what you can see on signs and hear in announcements on the bus.
We've actually asked the agency to find someone but they're not having much luck.
EDITED
They don't seem to have anyone on their books at the moment. So long as you're literate and numerate you'll do - and you get to see me once or twice a week.
EDIT: Apparently we have two people starting on Monday.

 | 09:50 am One ticket available to go (with me) to see The Late Edition Live at BBC TV Centre, White City, London.
You'd have to meet me between 2000 and 2045 outside as I'm picking the tickets up there.
Saw the live version of the show the other week - I found it to be most amusing. Basically it's a funny show about current events which insults Ann Robinson a lot.
EDIT for clarity: THIS IS TONIGHT

Time for something fun. I'm doing it anyway. Feel free to join me.
I'm staying in London next Thursday - then I'm going out on Friday (30th). This is the Texas Chainsaw night (www.texaschainsaw.co.uk). Looks like there'll be allsorts on. I was considering it to see "The Damned", but I couldn't really justify the expense. However, they've now reported that the support will be "Queen Adreena". Given this is their first show this year and I'm a rabid fan (who managed to miss Katie's side project due to moving house that day but did manage to see her art exhibition in Birmingham) I have to go.
Anyone up for joining me?
Currently considering the afterparty at Sin (next to the New Intrepid Fox) for an extra fiver.

 | 04:34 pm Well, a bit of an update is due.
Next week I should start working from home on Mondays and Fridays. I should start getting a bit more sleep.
This week I've been staying in a Hotel in Paddington. My last night's tonight and then I'm going to a hostel.
I only commute once a week to/from home. It typically takes me 3.75 hours to get down and 4.5 to get back (mostly as my journey down covers early morning and peak and my journey home covers peak/evening/late evening).
The rest of the time I've been staying with friends (less often now) and staying in hostels (most of the time now). I've been doing that 4 nights a week - from next week that should go down to 2 nights a week. I'm also going to start repeating hostels - typically staying at the some one for both nights. I've stayed at seven different ones so far and there's 5 I'd happily go back to. Most expensive night has been 15 quid so far. Cheapest was 8. The hostel this week is another new one, the next three weeks are vak at places I've been before
If anyone fancies a visit from a Nathan, let me know. I'm no longer desperate (and I'm booked up in hostels until the end of November). I'll only be staying down south Tuesday and Wednesday nights and generally alternate Tuesdays I'll be visiting the Calling (sometimes I'm staying Monday nights where I've failed to get a cheap train on the Tuesday morning). Volunteers with a bit of space after the Calling welcomed - I can't go into work next morning evey time - will be doing at the next one though ;)
This is because from next week I should be able to work Mondays and Fridays from home. I've been allowed to do it for over three weeks now, but our IM can't get their act together. They set up a laptop to let me access the work network last week, but not properly. It connected - it just didnt let me access any of my data...
Three trips on coaches have put me off for now. Two overnight and one leaving London at 1230 and me arriving home at 2015 :(
Walk up fare on train : £92.50 single.
My most expensive fare so far: £49.10 single (but it was first class) My cheapest fare so far: £8.10 single (and I've got 11 of them over the next 11 weeks)
Bus is another £1.20. I don't pay to travel in London (which is just as well).
I'm actually spending less time travelling to work than when I lived in Hertfordshire - it's just concentrated on two days of the week.
See you around.

 | 03:13 pm Been dead for last few weeks. Life is busy, internet is not often handy.
Am now living in Yorkshire, working in London. Am working to try and start doing the working from home thing 2 days a week shortly. The only thing holding it up is IM.
Have managed to buy a bunch of £5 tickets in GNER's current promotion (www.gner.co.uk/five) - almost all going North.
Will likely miss the next Goth Eucharist (6 Nov) - I get a rare (at the moment) chance to spend some time with my girlfriend.
Am likely to be at the one after.
More when I get a chance.

 | 05:05 pm So what's worth going out to, a week tomorrow? London preferred. All night (or offer of a place to go back to) also preffered.

 | 12:10 pm I've been off lj for a week or so, so I've probably missed loads of interesting stuff.
It's been a busy week.
Friday: Went and picked up keys to new house
Friday: Went to Infest
Saturday: Lots of pictures of girls with balls
Sunday: More pictures of girls with balls
(http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=12832&l=df877&id=536687395)
Monday morning: less than an hour in hotel room, then four(!) trains home.
Tuesday: Went to woom in Birmingham for the Katie Jane Garside exhibition. Interesting. Very odd. But then I'd expect nothing less. Rather a lot of nudity, too. Then NiN gig. I've missed them. Very good. Photos of girls in queue and Trent to follow...
Wednesday: Got home 0515. Packed up
Thursday: Mostly moved house. Long long day. Camped out in new house (on sofa bed)
Friday: Getting domestic. Changed lock, cleared drain, moved furniture.
Weekend disappeared somewhere (back in Hertfordshire).
And now I'm back.

 | 12:18 pm Very quickly for sallypointzero. It might be the wrong way up, and it's a "plonk on the desk and shoot" shot, but you'll probably get the idea. It's not my normal attire...
